Elk Grove Unified School District

Union House Elementary School

Sacramento, California

The modernization of Union House Elementary School is a significant project for the District and the community: a dense residential population that is under served and in great need of revitalization. Recognizing this, we worked with District staff, the school’s key constituents and community members to determine several priorities for the campus. The design features improvements to the existing exterior learning spaces as well as the development of under realized campus areas. Inspiration for the project was drawn from the school mascot, the Astronaut, and a space exploration theme contributes both playful and educational elements to the design.

We carved kid sized reading cubbies into the walls and selected movable seating and shelving for the Library, providing a variety of possible seating configurations. Classrooms have been upgraded with Audio Visual systems and interactive white boards. To expedite construction, the existing outdated vinyl tackboard was left in place and covered with a layer of felt tackable wall panels. The effect was an efficient modernization as well as an instant acoustic upgrade.

The project has been completed over a period of two years and four phases while remaining fully operational. Prop 39 roofing and HVAC upgrades along with portable relocation and site improvements were completed over the summer of 2018.
