ENR California’s 2019 Regional Best Projects Winners have been announced and we are proud to share that the Direct Relief Headquarters project in Santa Barbara has received an award of Merit for Manufacturing.
Each year, Engineering News-Record (ENR) California assembles a group of judges, with varying specialties and expertise in the construction industry, to review, score and form a panel to determine Best Projects winners for the region. Judges independently review entries, score each on pre-specified criteria, and convene with fellow judges to compare impressions and scores. Together, the judges’ panels select honorees for Best Project and Merit awards.
Direct Relief, a nonprofit aid organization celebrated their grand opening of their new headquarters and distribution center earlier this year.
The award-winning new 159,000 sf facility , also the largest accredited distribution hub for humanitarian medical aid nationwide, was designed to meet heightened federal requirements related to secure storage and distribution of prescription medications. ATI was the Architect of Record. The new facility is nearly four times the size of Direct Relief’s previous facility and equipped with state-of-the-art distribution technology for supplies.
The new facility features 122,000 sf of warehouse space and 3,400 sf cold storage space, which can cool 300 pallets. Just 30 pallets alone are enough insulin to treat 15,000 children with type 1 diabetes for a year.
In addition to its warehouse space, the new facility boasts a 34,000 sf 2-story office that includes several large assembly spaces to accommodate their large contingent of dedicated volunteers who help support the organization by packing relief supplies, staffing events, and contributing to various business operations.

ATI is an architectural and engineering services firm specializing in Institutional, Industrial, Commercial, and Civic projects, but that is only the beginning of our story.
In 1989, ATI’s Founding Principals envisioned the development of a full-service design and construction services company, specifically focused on completing projects better and faster than the rest of the market place. The organization was built to focus on developing right solutions, with a budget driven approach, and being a team with our clients at every step of the way.
In 2018, ATI joined the AC Martin Group of companies and is now among other renowned firms such as Los Angeles based AC Martin and Togawa Smith Martin. The merging of these companies brought together over 100 years of experience and a wide range of design expertise. Now our expanded and extended staff totals over 270 employees with broader regional coverage. This new era of ATI brings more capabilities and opportunities for our clients and an unmatched quality of work, service, integrity, and innovation to the marketplaces we serve.
