“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. Libraries change lives for the better.” – Sidney Sheldon
Public libraries are not just for books, they are a place where individuals go to gather, explore, interact, and imagine. One of the major roles of public libraries is their ability to help bridge the digital divide and also support lifelong learning.
ATI was hired by the City of San Ramon to be part of the Library Working Group to help facilitate the development of a Building Program to expand and remodel the San Ramon Library. The program’s goals for natural light, greater stack and task lighting, ample quiet space and study rooms, flexible seating, permanent and temporary public art displays, and state-of-the-art technology to facilitate research, individual study, check-out/returns, and access to public information were implemented in the final design of a new library within the existing building. Additionally, expanded and safe pedestrian and bicycle access, improved site lighting, and visual and physical interconnectivity with the new City Hall complex and surrounding MarketPlace commercial/retail neighbors are remaking the San Ramon Library into a welcoming and inviting destination place and hub for community activities.
The San Ramon City Council approved $4.45 million dollars for the construction phase of the library’s much anticipated expansion and renovation. The San Ramon Library project consists of a 3,200 sf. interior expansion of the second floor; approximately 18,200 sf. of interior remodel and renovation; extensive mechanical and electrical upgrades, technology enhancements; and 5,000 sf of site enhancements comprised of a new public plaza at the library’s new entrance at the corner of Bollinger Canyon Road and Market Street, refined landscaping, decorative paving and freestanding entry portals with new signage
Libraries build citizens. They are essential components of communities—worth fighting for and worth funding. Strengthening neighborhoods and championing the cultural lives of communities are big responsibilities. During the council meeting where funding was appropriated, City Council members made it a point to thank ATI for their hard work on the project. ATI is very proud to play a role in a project that is so important to our local community.
